He stood at the border of a village he last saw Zanji. However, he wasn't here to do meets and greets, but for a mission, and overly, he was determined to avoid Zanji at any and all costs. Although, it was more of a subconscious effort to hide his existence from his old friend, and there was much reason to do so. He was on the outskirts of Ounougakure, not for reasons to enter, that was easy, but to scout out the layout and changes made to security.
He wore his mask if he were forced to kill anyone who'd spot him doing his casing of the village borders. He wouldn't mind that much. It hadn't been long since he'd last seen the life in someone's eyes flicker out in despair of the unknown. It held so much fear. It shifted to him and made him feel even more alive than before. His preferred way to kill was the slitting of the throat. The life could be seen escaping from the person's eyes and body as their blood runs out of their body.
I shouldn't be thinking of this. He reminded himself as he continued, leaping through the areas avoiding the eyes of patrol. For some strange reason, his head was hurting more than before, and he didn't know why. It simply did.

It had been a long day, that was for certain. She was tired and dirty, and every part of her ached for a nice, relaxing hot bath, some tea, and about twelve hours of sleep. Unfortunately that would probably be a long time coming. There was so much wrapped up in the process of getting a mission officially completed that it often took forever.
She was heading along the path to Ounougakure proper, walking slowly. She would be expected back soon, but not soon enough that she couldn't have a relaxing walk back. Dressed in standard ANBU gear - for she had swiftly discovered that her standard attire was not appropriate for the types of missions she took - and with her fox mask covering her face, her only distinctive feature was her pure white hair. She'd grown fairly notorious as Ounou's Silver Fox; most of the local shinobi would be able to identify her from the hair (and probably mask) alone.
Out of the corner of her eye, she thought she saw movement; in and of itself, that wasn't unusual, but at the moment she was a little high-strung, to say the least. And so she went off in pursuit of the source of the movement. She doubted she would find anything worth mentioning, but it never hurt to have a quick look...

He moved without sound through the landscape that was Ounougakure's Borders. Then, at the corner of his eye, he'd saw a silver haired ANBU, and his head begun to pound incredibly loud, and he stumbled ever so slightly before immediately recovering from the throbbing of his head and back into stealth mode. However, he was too late. He could hear the footsteps, and heartbeat of the Silver-haired ANBU. She...ARGH!!!!!!!!!! His head throbbed with the pain of a thousand suns. How did he know it was a she? Wait, why is he asking himself that question? It was obvious right, the body type, size, height, and color length, slimness of the waist, and other features.
Despite being prepared to slaughter anyone that had caught even a glimpse of his attempt to case the outskirts, he instinctively hid himself and his heart had started to beat several times faster than normal as if he was...afraid. "Are you alright?" His head swiftly turned to his right as his back leaned against a tree-trunk in hiding. His eyes that was once tense turned incredibly calmed and relaxed. Eri! He thought of her name, and he wanted to speak but he wasn't safe. "Do you want to hide in the lake again? Maybe we can escape them there." Her words were so soft, and relaxed, just like before.
"There isn't a lake nearby." He whispered in his most quietest voice that could be released. "Really? Perhaps we can go hide out in my hideout. It's safe there. Come on, I'll heal you afterwards." He couldn't help but stare at her silver hair, and flawless skin tone. She was beautiful. Beyond that, and he wanted to tell her, but the words wouldn't come out. "Too far. Also, I'm not injured." He said in his once again quiet tone, but turning his view from her and looking away for signs of pursuers, but forgot to utilize his hearing. Eri's hideout was his home, every time he would go back there, and sleep, and it was the only time he could sleep for the past 3 years.
"But you are..." Her voice turned eery and trailed off with a softness. Zaizen's head throbbed once more and turned around with the words, "Wha...?" He turned around to be directly looking at the ANBU with silver hair. How did she gets so close? She was but a few meters out, and at any moment she could spot him by simply looking to her left. He backed away, ready to leap away in silence when his head begun throbbing once more with the words "you are" repeating in Eri's eery and soft tone. His feet went back and cracked some leaves beneath his feet rather loudly. His eyes then turned to see the ANBU, his mask hiding his pain and fear, but what was he afraid of? Getting caught? No. Dying? No, he welcomed it, and wanted it. Why should he live while she, her innocent heart and kind words die. Then what?

She was almost certain, in all honesty, that she had just heard a small animal or something of the like. Well - to be even more honest, that was what she wanted it to be. She was tired and stressed out and certainly not in the mood to be dealing with anyone trying to intrude upon the village. She was tempted to turn around and just go home without looking - if she did find someone, she would be obligated to take him or her out, and she felt she had wet her blade with the blood of others enough for one day. Even the thought of killing still made her uneasy, despite her work in the ANBU; she would always be a gentle soul, no matter what happened to her.
Still, she couldn't just turn away and leave; she was firmly on the path to discover what the source of the noise was, and turning back now would be a sign of the cowardice she had been so fervently trying to rid herself of. So, steeling her nerves, she continued forward, one hand resting on the hilt of her blade just in case.
Thinking she heard another noise, she froze, and merely listened. Nothing. And thus her approach continued until she heard the distinct crackling of dry leaves. So she hadn't imagined the first noise after all; until that moment she hadn't really been quite sure.
After that, it was quite easy to spot the masked man crouched down, attempting to hide. Her heart sank. Another soul to add to her long list of sins. She approached him, blade drawn, and pointed it at him - not in an attack, just an attempt to look mildly threatening... which she failed at ninety-nine percent of the time.
"State your name and business here. You had better have a good reason for skulking around, or I'm going to have to ask you to leave." Always polite. Always diplomatic. Even though she knew with a certainty that he was there for no good reason, she still couldn't bring herself to just attack him. No, she would only attack him if she was provoked.
Whether that was wise or foolish was yet to be seen.

His eyes couldn't focus correctly. His very vision turned blurred and all he saw was the faint image of the silver ANBU with a blade pointed towards his form. Instincts were suppressed, he made no attempt to defend himself; no, to be more accurate - he couldn't. "Are you going to kill her, Zaizen-kun?" His eyes widened to the point of being horrendously strained, and his vision did not get any better in his action. He felt a build up in his lungs, and his head started to pound once more. He couldn't breathe or think. Blade pointed towards him, and all he could was stand there in fear...and he didn't know why. There was moments where he'd have cold shakes in the midst of the night as he slept in his home, but that's it. Never this severe.
Her voice was drowned out by the voice of Eri. "Just kidding. Just leave, Zaizen-kun. Just leave..." Her voice trailed out, and he went from highly agitated to surprisingly and disturbingly calm. Stepping backwards, he tripped on absolutely nothing and landed on his ass, his eyes looking at the ANBU with the blade pointed towards him. Why can't I? He wanted to, with all his might, feel alive once more by taking her life. Cherish the moment her light of life went out in her gaze. "No." Was his first audible word thus far in the past two hours. He could feel Eri's presence behind her, his mind producing steps and her scent as she leaned over his shoulder from behind and looked at him with her soft steel grey gaze. "Come on, Zaizen-kun. I'll heal you."
Her gaze of steel grey faded into darkness until the life was snuffed out of her and she dropped beside him. He stood to the right of him with fear, from the ANBU's point of view, he'd just looked at the ground in shakes and fear, whilst in his, he'd seen her dead body laying beside him. In seconds she turned into an horrific corpse, unrecognizable but he could remember her scent. "No!" His voice amped up in volume as he screamed out loud his dismay.
"E...ERI!!!!!" He shouted to the heavens, and in a split-second, his insanity state ended and he became calm, his hand reached into his pocket and shattered a smoke bomb at his feet. He jumped back onto his feet, and shunshin'd a few meters to the south. He was back to himself in a flip of a switch. I'm not dying until I kill her. Mitsuko, Rina...You will die before me.

Her hand shook slightly as she held her blade. The man didn't seem like he was going to defend himself, or do much of anything, really... He seemed a little out of it - a lot out of it, actually - but she couldn't tell whether the feeling was due to fear alone, or if there was something else going on. If she had to hazard a guess, she would think the latter; he hadn't even really reacted to her statement.
Her brow arched when he spoke a single word: "No." And... perhaps she was imagining it, but there was something about his voice that stirred up a memory... It sounded oddly familiar, but she was fairly confident that she didn't know this man, or at least hadn't seen him anytime recently. She would certainly have remembered him if that was indeed the case.
At that point, she sheathed the Kusanagi. It was clear he wasn't able to properly defend himself, and she certainly wasn't going to attack him that state. In fact, she was beginning to think he might not have been actually snooping around at all., that he was just lost and confused... And that made her heart go out to him, like the softy she was. She couldn't help that she cared, even if she hadn't a clue who he was.
She froze entirely when he screamed her name. The young woman didn't know what to do... how did he know her? Why was he here? A fresh wave of anxiety swept over her, and her stillness was only broken when he broke the smoke bomb. "Wait! Don't go!"
But he wasn't gone. She could see that much after the smoke had cleared. And timidly, she approached, taking care to not appear threatening in the slightest. Her curiosity had been roused, and until she remembered from where she knew this man, she didn't want him to run away.
"You're not in any danger. Not at this moment. So, please... Don't run."

He'd stopped as he got a bit ways off after his jump with Shunshin no Jutsu. He was still within his own thoughts as he stopped, as if he was waiting for Eri to appear - not dead, just like Zaizen. However, he knew that wasn't coming to fruition. She was dead, and he was only fooling himself with thinking that she was alive. He just wanted her to be alive. He accepted that, and his goal. It was then that he'd heard her voice. Eri?!? He turned rapidly around and saw the image of Eri approaching quietly. "E...ri..." The image of her cute form disappeared and turned into the image of the silver haired ANBU who was exactly similar in both height and body type, but different. She's not Eri.
He should just kill her and begone with it. It seemed the ANBU had no desire to let him leave, and took him as nothing but a harmless individual, but she'll soon regret coming at him with that assumption. He was anything but. He turned his entire body around, his cloak fluttering and spinning as he did, and his mask revealing a glimmer of crimson from it. "I've already decided to spare you once. Leave me be or pay the price." What? He didn't want to say that...but he did. His mouth took over for itself and spoke, but what he wanted to do was attack her directly and kill her. He wanted to feel alive, alive for Eri, alive for revenge, and simply alive.

She was treading on thin ice here, that she knew for sure. With anyone that appeared as unstable as this man, you never knew when they would snap. She was, indeed, willfully endangering her life for the sake of curiosity alone. Many of her comrades would call her a fool. And perhaps she was. Perhaps, as she approached the tall man, she was walking towards her death. The thought made her nervous, of course - that was a given - but she refused the fear that was welling up inside of her. She wanted answers from him, and then she would be satisfied. If he decided he wanted to attack her sometime, that was that, and she would have to deal with the consequences of her irrational actions.
She halted upon seeing the flash of red in his eyes. His identity was on the tip of her tongue; the flash of red, and his words - however cold and unfeeling they were, which she knew to be quite the difference from the memory she held of him - had brought the memory to the surface, as fresh as if it had happened the previous day. "...Zaizen-kun?" she murmured, eyes widening. She wasn't sure what had happened to him over the last few years, but he certainly didn't seem to be the same man.
"Zaizen-kun, it's alright. It's just me. Eri." Even though she really wasn't supposed to, she removed the kitsune mask and allowed him to see her face. "It's just me. I won't hurt you. I promise."

He paused as she uttered his name. How did...she...know? He didn't move, or to be more accurate, he was frozen and couldn't move. Was she someone of his past? Sora? Was she Sora ANBU? Was she here hunting him down? Did she want the Black Phantom! DID SHE WANT TO KILL HIM!!!! His mind spun, and under his mask his cold indifferent face turned into a vicious scowl. Until...the silver haired ANBU identified herself. Eri...Identified herself as Eri. He didn't believe it, he couldn't. Then, she begun to remove the mask. The mask that would expose the truth, if she really was Eri. Time seemed to stop for him as he hand pulled the mask away revealing barely anything. Albeit it seemed as if time had stopped, it was simply his Sharingan utilizing it's ability to seemingly slow down perceptual capabilities to enhance predictions.
"Zaizen-kun...you know I'm dead...right?" Eri appeared behind the silver haired ANBU, and begun to walk through the ANBU and towards him. "I'm dead, no matter what you want to believe. And she, she's simply an Illusion. She's not real. Kill her, and her lies." He stopped, deep in thought for what seemed like hours or days but only a split second of mental thought in reality. "Die."
He inhaled, and spat out a huge ball of fire towards the ANBU. "That's right. Kill her. Kill Rina. Kill them all, all for me." Eri's voice could be heard, and all Zaizen could do was smirk as the ball left his lips.

A part of her had thought that he recognized her already. That when he had spoken her name he was conscious of her presence. But as time wore on she could clearly see that this was not the case. In fact she was beginning to suspect that he was deluded, not merely confused. Unfortunately, that was outside the realm of the problems she knew how to help with. And she really wasn't sure if her presence was making his delusions worse or not.
That soft heart of hers wouldn't let her leave without at least trying to help someone she considered a friend. Even if she wasn't exactly sure how to help. She was kind of going on the assumption that if she kept calm, and kept trying to calm him down, eventually something would happen. Whether that something was good or bad, only time would tell.
As the ball of fire moved toward her, she used Shunshin to move behind him. That probably wasn't going to help anything, but it was the first place she'd thought of, and there she was. Anyone would expect an ordinary shinobi to then attempt to put a kunai or sword through them. But Eri wasn't just any shinobi, and attacking him in return wasn't going to help her get through to him.
So, instead - and what a brilliant idea this was - the young woman took a few hesitant steps toward him and hugged him from behind, without having a clue what his (probably violent) reaction would be. "Zaizen-kun, please. I don't want to hurt you," she murmured. Of course, if she did, she could always heal him - she wasn't going to do anything a good healing jutsu wouldn't fix - if he would let her, anyway.

The fireball that raged towards False-Eri blocked her from his view, and so, when she'd moved towards to behind, he didn't notice. In truth, it's more he didn't want to. He had the highest reflexes and reaction time ever, trained meticulously through continuously effort, and he knew he would see her movement if he wanted to follow her, but subconsciously he didn't and so consciously, he didn't. However, she did appear behind him, and grabbed him from behind. He, once more, stood frozen where he stood and couldn't react. "N..n...no." His words drifted off, and as did his reasoning and thoughts.
"Zaizen-kun!" A voice screamed where the flames burned harshly from his fireball and the grassy area. This would attract attention soon enough. However, right now, he saw within that burning field a shape all to similar to him calling out his name. "ZAIZEN-KUN! SAVE ME!" His eyes expanded in panic, and the hug was ignored, with insane speed, he twisted around and struck False-Eri's temple with his right elbow. He would follow up, if hit, or not, with grabbing her shoulder with his left hand and swing her around him and off towards a tree with all his might. The moment she was off him, he'd Shunshin into the fire and feel the heat onto his skin. "Eri! WHERE ARE YOU!" The left sleeve of his cloak would ignite onto fire as he continued to search around for the ghost he knew didn't exist.
"Eri!" He shouted with tremendous panic in his voice. "You've saved me, unlike before. However, now you need to leave. Leave now, before you can't avenge me." Zaizen was ludicrously happy at her presence showing up before his sights that he ignored the flames that burned his left sleeve and spreading. He jumped up and away into the branches of the trees, and stopped for a second. "Don't follow me, or I will kill you." Again, words he didn't feel the need to say, but as if someone else was saying them. Yet, despite him saying that, he didn't move.

His response was indeed violent. She didn't react quick enough to avoid the blow to her temple; he struck with a speed she hadn't known he possessed. Even if she'd tried, she didn't think she could have avoided the blow entirely. It left her dazed, and of course, with his superior speed, size, and physical strength, he was able to fling her into a tree - and she hit the trunk hard, falling to her knees, a soft whimper escaping her.
He obviously didn't recognize her, and probably thought she was someone else, someone dangerous - but that was really as far as her thought process got at the moment. Impacting into a tree kind of did that to a person. With her damnable luck, she was probably at least a little concussed. But at the moment she couldn't quite bring herself to care about her own condition. Every word Zaizen spoke struck a blow into her heart; she wanted to help, to fix him, to return him to the kind man she had once known. What was a little injury here or there in an attempt to help a friend?
However obedient she usually was, she certainly wasn't going to follow his instruction and just let him leave, no matter how much he insisted upon it, or how much her head hurt. "I won't leave you, Zaizen-kun. Not until you know who I am." Perhaps the words were meaningless to him; he hadn't really responded to anything else she had said, so she was unsure whether he was actually hearing her or not.
Shakily, she stood, using the tree to help her regain at least a little of her balance, and headed after him. Only, he didn't continue to flee. He just... stopped. And stared. As if he had anticipated that she would come after him and wanted to just end the confrontation then and there, without bothering to run from her.
