Usually, she was not the type of person to take foolish risks.
Perched on a rooftop in the village she had once called home, looking down on the dead midnight streets, she felt very foolish indeed.
Eri was not quite sure what had possessed her to make this trip. Where she now lived, she was safe. As safe as any rogue shinobi could be, anyway. Where she lived, there wasn't any danger, wasn't any risk...
...but there wasn't much companionship either.
She supposed that was what she sought. Familiar faces. She wanted to walk down the streets of the village and look at the storefronts, reminisce in front of the administrative building. A fool's wish.
She supposed that made her a fool.
Was it really so wrong, this wish she had? As, if not for an unfortunate happening, a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, the village would still be her home. She would not have to seek its comfort in the dead of night, a cold wind sending a chill straight through to her bones, the moon bathing the village in its pale light. She would be able to speak to those she had once considered friends, those whose backs had turned on her at the false accusations of one person.
Until that day, she had never known how badly words could hurt.
She had fled, choosing her life over a dishonorable death as a traitor to the village. Although, she mused, if - when - someone caught her lurking about on rooftops, she would die that death she had sought to evade.
Though she had a veritable legend sheathed at her side, and the skills to wield it with deadly efficiency, there was something within her that made her hesitate when she reached for the blade. She would tremble when she drew it, and the thought of the wickedly sharp sword slicing through flesh and cutting to bone, splattering blood about, made her sick.
Idly, she traced the pattern on the hilt, and frowned.
If she was found by someone capable of catching her, she would almost certainly die.
The worst part about it all was that the thought did not upset her.
...she had stalled long enough. If she didn't go now, she never would.
Casting a glance at the residence she intended to enter, she determined that it was as safe as it would ever get. There wasn't anyone outside... Not anyone she could see, anyway.
Taking a deep breath, she descended from her rooftop perch and slipped around to the back of the house with a practiced ease.
This was not her first attempt. But every time, approaching the door, she lost her nerve, turned, and fled back home.
But tonight she was going to do it. She was going to steel her nerves and slink inside and find the person she was seeking. Either that, or she'd end up dead.
Eri slipped inside the house, ghosting across the floor. She made nary a sound, except for those times when she stepped on an errant floorboard and it let out a long groan. Every time, she froze, not even daring to breath, just waiting to hear sounds that never came.
She passed a closed door, and heard a cough from within. Pressing her body against a wall, crouching down behind a house plant, she stared with wide gray eyes at the door, waiting for it to swing open. If her heart beat any faster, it would not surprise her if it tore its way out of her chest.
The door never opened.
Eventually, she slid out from behind the plant and continued silently down the hall.
Outside the bedroom door of the woman she had wished to speak to for so long, Eri hesitated. Her thoughts were full of doubt. What if she had believed the allegation? What if she thought Eri was a traitor? What if she never wanted to see the white-haired girl again, and what if she stepped inside that door and received a cold, heartless gaze and a quick death?
The thought terrified her, but nevertheless, she reached for the nob, opened the door, and slipped inside, closing it. She hoped the soft clicking sound had not alarmed anyone - although, why would it?
For a long moment, her eyes rested upon the prone form of her sleeping friend. Just the sight of her filled Eri's heart with a warmth she hadn't known she would ever be able to feel again.
"Rina-chan... Wake up, Rina-chan." she murmured quietly.
